Drug Overdose Deaths: The DHMH Vital Statistics Administration (VSA) maintains a registry of unintentional drug and alcohol-related deaths from data made available by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and VSA. VSA prepares a series of reports containing detailed information on overdose deaths that have occurred in the State. The annual report, released in the summer of the following year, examines fatal overdose trends in the State by: age at the time of death, race and ethnicity, sex, place of death, and substances related to death.
Drug Overdose Emergency Department Visits: The Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission’s (HSCRC) outpatient discharge files are analyzed by VSA to extract drug and alcohol-related emergency department visits. The State charges the HSCRC with regulating the rates and revenues of Maryland’s 46 acute care and five specialty hospitals. HSCRC collects discharge medical records containing information on patient demographics, diagnoses, services, resident location, and charges for each of Maryland's approximately 2 million emergency department visits annually.
