More information on overdose preventionin Maryland can be found on the Behavioral Health Administration's overdose prevention website.

Drug Overdose Deaths: The DHMH Vital Statistics Administration (VSA) maintains a registry of unintentional drug and alcohol-related deaths from data made available by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and VSA. VSA prepares a series of reports containing detailed information on overdose deaths that have occurred in the State. The annual report, released in the summer of the following year, examines fatal overdose trends in the State by: age at the time of death, race and ethnicity, sex, place of death, and substances related to death.
Drug Overdose Emergency Department Visits: The Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission’s (HSCRC) outpatient discharge files are analyzed by VSA to extract drug and alcohol-related emergency department visits. The State charges the HSCRC with regulating the rates and revenues of Maryland’s 46 acute care and five specialty hospitals. HSCRC collects discharge medical records containing information on patient demographics, diagnoses, services, resident location, and charges for each of Maryland's approximately 2 million emergency department visits annually.

*In 2014, VSA updated the methodology used to identify overdose deaths; therefore, the data contained in the 2013 Annual Report should serve as a baseline for comparison with future data.

In December 2012, DHMH released a factsheet titled "Heroin Overdose Deaths on the Rise; Rx Opioid Overdose Deaths Down" detailing an emerging trend in overdose deaths in the State.  Concurrent with the release of this factsheet, the Department sent letters to Maryland healthcare practitioners and local health departments that provided information on the recent shift from pharmaceutical opioid to heroin involvement in overdose deaths and clinical strategies for reducing patients' overdose risk.  These materials can be found at:
