CEU Guidelines

All entities seeking CEU  course approval must remit the required fees.  There is no exception for school systems or educational institutions.

General Information:
The following courses are unsatisfactory: Inservice education, on-the-job training, "experimental" courses and short conferences including "overview approaches to numerous unrelated topics." Continuing education activities that involve less than 10 contact hours of instruction will be evaluated carefully for merit as a significant learning experience. Only complete instructional hours are considered in assigning total CEUs. Fractions are disregarded.

To Course Sponsors:
The requirements listed below are to be followed when applying for CEU credits. Please note: Under COMAR 10.38.07.the Board is authorized to charge $50 to cover administrative costs of reviewing courses. Checks are to be made payable to The Board of Physical Therapy Examiners and submitted with the CEU application. Course approval will expire four years after date of acceptance.

Note: Course application must be sent in at least six weeks in advance of the course date. If an instructor is not licensed by the Board and plans to perform physical therapy in conjunction with the course, a restricted license is required. The fee is $125.00. Send in a copy of the instructor's license with their cv. A restricted license will be issued for the dates of the course

Requirements:

  1. Satisfactory completion of CEU course application.

  2. Physical therapy related subject matter (clinical/application--patient care, e.g., documentation, risk management, quality assurance).

  3. Clear and concise written statements of intended learning outcomes (e.g. behavioral or performance objectives) for each continuing education program/activity

  4. Content and instructional methodologies that are consistent with stated learning outcomes. A complete hour by hour agenda must be included with the application.

  5. The curriculum vitae for all instructors (and potential instructors) shall reflect competence in subject matter and skill in the instructional methodologies. Meeting the criteria requires that the provider will not substitute instructors. A restricted license is required for all out-of-state instructors participating in a "hands-on" course or workshop. Contact the Board office for information.

  6. A plan for assessment of learning outcomes is to be provided (e.g. pre- and post-tests).

  7. The following is the only statement that can be used in advertising that a course meets the CEU criteria for the Maryland Board of Physical Therapy Examiners: "This course has been approved by the Maryland State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners for ____ CEUs. The sponsor will issue a CEU certificate upon completion of the course. A record of CEUs earned will be retained by the sponsor

  8. The board shall approve a continuing education course for a period of four years. The sponsor shall submit to the Board for approval any changes in speaker, content or length.
