Maryland HIV Statistics

Overview

  • On December 31, 2007; Maryland had a total of 28,270 people living with HIV and AIDS (Cases reported by name through December 31, 2008).

  • While Maryland ranks 19th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in total population, in 2007 Maryland was 9th in cumulative number of AIDS cases (31,931 through December 31, 2007) and 4th among U.S. states and territories in AIDS case report rate (24.8 cases per 100,000 population during 2007).

  • Baltimore-Towson had the fourth highest AIDS case report rate of any major metropolitan area, 29.6 cases per 100,000 population during 2007.

  • Maryland began reporting HIV cases by coded identifier in June 1994 and by name in April 2007. There are an estimated 2,100 new HIV infections per year in Maryland.
