Data and Statistics
The Center for Surveillance and Epidemiology uses case surveillance, epidemiological investigations, and other studies to determine the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on Maryland's residents, institutions, and government. Data and information derived from studies are used to design programs for prevention and health care, and support requests for federal funds.
Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), the advanced stage of disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), has been at epidemic levels for the last two decades in the State of Maryland. Maryland has recorded a total of 31,256 AIDS cases and 16,546 deaths among AIDS cases through September 30, 2007. Since Maryland HIV surveillance began in 1994, more than 20,000 non-AIDS HIV cases have been reported.
